Dolgopolov def. Wawrinka

Next to Milos Raonic, Alexandr Dolgopolov has shown himself to be one of the most exciting players to watch on the ATP tour this year. Dolgopolov has followed up his surprising run at the Australian open by reaching the finals in the Brasil Open (lost to Nicolas Almagro) earlier this month, and now he's through to the semi-finals in Acapulco. Here are the results of the Dolgopolov vs. Wawrinka:

Dolgopolov is quickly becoming known for more than just his unusually low ball toss and quick service motion. His ability to zip around the court and come up with brilliant shots seemingly out of nowhere is a real treat to watch. The amount of sidespin Dolgopolov is able to generate with his backhand slice is reminiscent of the tricky stylings of Boo from Mario Tennis. Yeah, I went there. Anyone who has played the game knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Game Boo.

Final Four in Dubai

The top three seeds have made it through to the semi-finals for the first time in Dubai. Richard Gasquet came back from one set down to defeat Gilles Simon and earn himself a spot in the next round. Gasquet will face Roger Federer, whom he hasn't beaten in his last seven attempts. Considering how Federer has cruised through the draw this week (he hasn't dropped serve yet), I don't think that streak will be broken anytime soon. Read about this match here.

On the other side of the draw, we have Novak Djokovic taking on Tomas Berdych. This has the makings of a great match. Djokovic is on a roll since winning the Australian Open, and it seems like Berdych is always playing well lately. More about this matchup here.

Will we see a (1) Federer vs. (2) Djokovic final? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Is Federer RoboCop?

According to Roger himself, he isn't. A shocking admission, I know. Speculation had abounded for years concerning his almost mechanistic uber-fitness and laser-like focusing abilities. Turns out, Federer sometimes comes down with an acute case of Wandering Mind Syndrome. I guess when you've won 16 major titles, it's hard to keep your head in the game in the smaller tournaments. No offense, Granollers.

But all joking aside, both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are through to the quarterfinals in Dubai. Federer had leisurely match today against Marcel Granollers (ESP), winning 6-3, 6-4. The same cannot be said for Nole who was tested in an exciting 3-set match against model/tennis player Feliciano Lopez. After handily winning the second set by a margin of two service breaks, Lopez was unable to keep that momentum going in the third and lost to Djokovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Raonic pulls out of Acapulco

I was just checking the schedule for the day in Acapulco and couldn't find Raonic's name. So I checked the draw, and his spot has been filled by a Lucky Loser by the name of Daniel Muñoz de la Nava (ESP). After a quick Google search, I found this article from the Globe & Mail which states that Raonic has pulled out of the Acapulco tournament due to a shoulder injury.

According to the Tennis Canada Twitter page, Raonic is still planning to play for Canada in the Davis Cup while in Mexico. The shoulder injury is obviously bad news, but it's good to hear that it won't keep him out of competition for very long.

What a bummer.

New “Flag Counter” on the SideBar

I added a "Flag Counter" on the right hand sidebar to track locations of visitors to our pages, and commented on the previous post that our first non-Canadian visitor was Spanish (and speculated that it might be Ferrer or Verdasco - probably Verdasco).

So...
I realize Verdasco and Ferrer are in Mexico and not in Spain – so what I said doesn't actually make much sense.  Here’s what the flag counter looks like now though in a happy coincidence:

Flag Counter at 10:30 pm - 21 Feb 2011

So we have 69 pageviews including 2 unique visitors from Mexican computers, 1 from South Africa, still only 1 from Spain, 3 from the U.S., and 18 different Canadians in about the last 3 hours or so, cool stuff.  Will be interesting over the next week or so to see where our readers are...

Acapulco (and Delray Beach)

After that terrific final against Andy Roddick in Memphis, Milos heads to Acapulco, Mexico for another ATP 500 event. Here is the tournament website. The singles draw is set, and it looks like Raonic will take on Argentinian Carlos Berlocq in the first round. Milos has a "day off" and isn't scheduled to play today -- I assume he'll play tomorrow, but it doesn't look like the order of play is set right now (or it just hasn't been posted on the website yet).

Not sure if this tournament will be streamed online for free, or if there will be any TV coverage of the early rounds here in Canada. Sportsnet coverage of Acapulco will start on Wednesday, according to the Canadian Sports Media Blog tennis schedule. Sportsnet One will be showing the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships starting this morning at 10:00AM ET.

In other Canadian tennis news, Frank Dancevic is current making his way through the qualifying rounds at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships, an ATP 250 event. Dancevic has one more round of qualifying to go before earning a spot in the main draw. Here are the results from yesterday, and the schedule for today.

Plenty of tennis to keep an eye on this week.

Memphis finals had it all

Great serving, swings in momentum, and even ref bashing. The final in Memphis truly had it all. Unfortunately for Raonic fans (guilty as charged), Roddick came away with the title. What a match, though. I could describe and dissect the details of the match, but that really wouldn't do it justice. In fact, it would be an injustice. You kind of had to watch it.

Good luck in Mexico, Milos.

“Most hits on YouTube”

After Milos' final showdown today in Memphis at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships he mentioned he was glad he would be "in the description" of the most popular YouTube video showing Andy Roddick's fantastic winner on Championship Point.
Here's the video he was talking about:

If anyone has a better version please leave a comment and I'll edit the post to include it. Just finished the PVR'd match and now heading to take my dogs out to pee...

EDIT: 22 Feb 2011 - this looks to be the popular version on YouTube, more popular than the one I posted originally:

ATP Rising Stars poll

Milos is currently leading in the ATP Rising Stars poll on the ATP website. As I write this, Raonic has 54% of the vote, followed by Alexandr Dolgopolov with 39%. Dolgopolov is currently ranked higher than Raonic, but the poll asks which player will finish the year with the highest rank. Both players had great runs at the Australian Open this year: Raonic lost in the Round of 16 to Simon Gruel, and Dolgopolov reached the quarterfinals before losing to Andy Murray.

Have you voted yet? I have.

Raonic “unstoppable”

Will Roddick be able to keep Raonic from winning his second ATP title in as many weeks? If Milos is indeed "unstoppable", as this article suggests, then the answer has to be no. But Roddick will have something to say about that less than two hours from now, especially after his convincing win over former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.

Will all the tough 3-set matches catch up with Raonic this afternoon? Let's hope not. After all, Milos says there's "still juice left in the tank" and that he's "ready to fight". Whose serve will win out today? I guess we'll know soon enough.

Bring it, Milos.
