June 26: Milos plays Igor Sijsling Thursday, June 17, third-up on Court 18, so maybe 3pm SW19 time, 10am ET, 7am PT.

June 25: Milos defeats Berlocq in pretty decisive fashion, 6-4 6-3 6-3. Milos took 42% of receiving points, 88% of his first serves, 62% of second serves, with 71% of first serves in, 19 aces; only 18 unforced errors vs 54 (!) winners. Berlocq managed only one break point in the match, late in the third set, while Milos was a threat in almost every one of Berlocq's service games. Milos' backhand, though used sparingly, was effective; many good cross-court then down-the-line or inside-out combinations, and nice touch at the net. Great to see Milos' shot selection filling out.

Milos joins fellow Canadians Genie Bouchard, Vasek Pospisil and Jesse Levine in the second round, the first time in twenty-five years **[comments, please!] four Canadians have made it to the second round of a slam together. Next up for Milos will be Igor Sijsling (ATP#59); if he can get past Sijsling he'll meet either Denis Kudla (#112) or Ivan Dodig (#54) who upset Kohlschreiber (retired fifth set) today.

June 24: Milos is scheduled to play third on Court 12, Tuesday, June 25; after Harrison v Chardy, so maybe 2pm to 3pm local time, approx. 9-10 ET, 6-7 PT.

June 23: Looks like Milos will play Tuesday, as he is not on Order of Play for Monday -- contrary to what we've seen on some betting sites. However, Canadians can cheer for Eugenie Bouchard, first-up on Court 8, followed by Vasek Pospisil, also on Court 8.

June 21: The Wimbledon draw is out, and Milos could have done worse, given that he is seeded outside of the top 16. Milos, in the second (Ferrer) quarter, will face Carlos Berlocq (ATP#72) in round one. If he wins that match he will meet either Alex Kuznetsov (#173) or Igor Sijsling (#59). The likely third-round (R32) opponent would be 16th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber (#18).

  1. Disappointing loss today. While it goes without saying that this has been an unusual Wimbledon thus far with all of the withdrawals and upsets in the first two rounds, this is still an opponent that he should have taken advantage of. I don’t think he played at the net enough and getting into too many baseline rallies resulting in unforced errors. I really liked his play at the French Open following quality shots to the net and putting the pressure on the opponent to make a difficult passing shot. I suppose he just did not have enough quality shots to followup. His inside out forehand let him down a few times. The commentator said it best that he seemed to be making too many errors on shots where he was just trying to move Sijsling around the court. Those are the types of errors that need to be reduced. Sijsling played very well and definitely deserved the victory today, but Milos was not at his best, nor has he been throughout the grass court season (Thank goodness its a short part of the schedule).

He really missed an opportunity near the end of the second set to break when he had Sijsling down 0-40. He really needed to dig deep and get the break in that situation. He cannot win if he is losing 74% of the opponents second serves no matter how well he is serving. These are parts of his game I feel like he can address by the heart of the hard court season now that he has a little bit more time to work with his coach between tournaments through the coming weeks.

What I am more worried about for him is his mindset when he falls behind. Several times he had to hold himself back from smashing his racket, at least one when you just have to tip your cap to your opponent for making a nice shot. It seems like he loses his composure after falling behind and this is not a good quality for someone to be breaking into the top 10. All it takes is one big win where he breaks through despite some poor play. That would give him the confidence to know he can win when he falls behind. Let’s hope this does not continue to be an issue for him in the future and that the hard court season is more kind to him than grass. He’s going to have a difficult time bringing his ranking up for the US Open while defending two quarterfinal appearances leading up to the final grand slam.

Unfortunately the second round was not too kind for the Canadian men with all three of them losing. Let’s hope Eugenie Bouchard can make up for that with a nice run into the second week.

    • Looks like Bouchard went down 5-7, 2-6 to Suarez Navarro today. Bummer.

    • Weirdest. Slam. Ever. (since I’ve been paying attention, anyways)

    • Milos:

“Wimbledon’s still my favourite tournament. It’s me that’s the problem, not the court.”

He is truly honest, very respectable; unlike Djokovic. I remember him saying “I don’t want to make excuses, I had a long, 5-set match in the semi-final, but I’m not going to make excuses”.

  2. Can we get some clarification about “first time in 24 years” …or is it “15 years”? Does that include Doubles? Daniel plays doubles tomorrow (June 26); will we have FIVE Canadians through to the second round of a Slam?

  3. milos advanced in straight sets. serve is working. who’s up next?

  4. Milos has a decent draw. If he were to make it all the way to the quarters, it’s better to face ferrer than anyone else in the top 8. Ferrer is probably the lightest hitter and than is a big plus on grass. Plus the fact that Ferrer has not done that well on grass in the past, and also because he only got one match on the surface this year losing in the first round at the Unicef Open, makes his the best one to face in a potential quarter final clash.

I think Milos has to move better and also stop hitting net shots cross court when the opponent would have a harder time down the line. Some of the tactics I saw were suspect against Dodig this week and if he plays like that again, he won’t do well. By the way, he could face Dodig in the 3rd round who has a 2-0 H2H…

    • I think either Dodig or Kohlschreiber would be a challenge, they both seem to have a better time than most against Milos. 3rd round will be tough…. But first things first: Tuesday.

    • Looks like that Dodig match is a step closer to occurring…

  5. Not a bad draw at all. Could think of a better match-up in R32 though, Philipp Kohlschreiber has been a tricky opponent for Milos and has been doing well on tour lately. Looking fwd to Wimbledon!
