Milos Raonic – Canada Fan Blog an (unofficial) blog about tennis and Canadian player Milos Raonic

8Aug/13Off

Two (2) Canadians make the Quarter-Finals at the Rogers Cup Masters 1000 in Montréal, Québec!

Update, Aug 9th: Both Canadians, Raonic and Pospisil, into the semifinals!

Had to watch the match late today, will not be able to watch it live tomorrow either... Staying away from any electronic communication will be hard, but the excitement when I do get to watch it will be worth it! In case you haven't heard:

From Daniel:
"
We've an all Canadian Semifinal folks. Vasek Pospisil won due Davydenko retiring at 3-0 for Vasek in the 1st Set.

Milos toughed out an 7:6 (3), 4:6, 6:4 win over Ernests Gulbis.

If World No 1 Novak Djokovic beats Richard Gasquet in todays Nightsession Milos will vie for a Top 10 Spot tomorrow.
"
So, The Canadian bits of the Order of Play for tomorrow in Montréal looks like this:

Not before 3:00 p.m.
[WC] V Pospisil (CAN) vs [11] M Raonic (CAN)

Not before 6:00 p.m.
[6] R Lindstedt (SWE) / D Nestor (CAN) vs
C Fleming (GBR) / A Murray (GBR)

Then Nadal and Djokovic will face off (not before 8pm) to see who gets to face off against the Canadian finalist (any predictions?)...

Update:

Pospisil and Raonic will play the first two matched on Court Central tomorrow vs. Davydenko and Gulbis, respectively. Vasek starts at noon (12:00) Eastern (EDT) and Milos will follow, not before 2pm (1400).

Wow, happy to be back in business.  Raonic has dismissed a less-than-100-percent del Potro in straights, he and Vasek Pospisil will take on opponents they both have a very good chance of defeating in their quarter-final matches tomorrow (Gulbis and Davydenko, respectively).

Both players worked hard for their victories today, and put on great performances, giving Canada a one-two punch in the Quarter-Finals of the Rogers Cup for the first time since 1989.  If they both win tomorrow, they win a date with each other in the semi-finals!

Regarding his visit from the doc and the trainer, Raonic said it was a loss of strength in his arm, a numbness feeling, something he had to get under control.  He said he'd managed to find his way through it by battling through, and that he should have no problem getting under control for tomorrow.

  1. Nadal is exposing a major problem with Raonic: he doesn’t move his feet. He’s not very mobile on the court. I’m afraid if that’s the case, it’s only his serve that’s number 10 on the ATP rankings. Not much of a chance to beat any top tens though.

    • I’m sure he’s working on it- also, he needs to play to his strengths, work on serving and volleying, power shots. He won’t win long baseline rallies, and the gap between him and the top 5 is too great in that area. It seems he’s got a game plan and he and his coach are working toward it.

And he has beaten top-10s before, and has much of a chance of doing it again. Nadal is not a fair example to judge his performance against others in the top-10!!!

  2. This could be the breakthrough Milos needs to give him that confidence to close the door on tight matches.
Either way it will be a great match to watch against Rafa.

  3. Milos has done it. He beat his good buddy Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) and reached the Rogers Cup Final.

My whole hearted Commies to Vasek who played his Heart out today. While Vasek had less mistakes overall they came at crucial moments. I guess the experience carried Milos through.

Milos will break into the Top 10 for the 1st Time in his Career come Monday.

  4. MVP stands for Milos/Vasek POWER

  5. We’ve an all Canadian Semifinal folks. Vasek Pospisil won due Davydenko retiring at 3-0 for Vasek in the 1st Set.

Milos toughed out an 7:6 (3), 4:6, 6:4 win over Ernests Gulbis.

    • This is pretty unbelievable. Think about what our expectations were a week ago. I’ll be happy if either of them win now. What an opportunity for these two players; and for one of them to make a Masters 1000 final? Wow.

      • Tbh, I’m quite surprised too. I didn’t see this coming. I think Vasek will be a consistent Top 30 Player in the not too distant Future.

  6. Milos should have refused to take the point when he touched the net. Sportsmanship is more important!

  7. Big match for both Canadians tomorrow. Would love to see the two of them square off in the semis. Should Vasek win tomorrow I believe he would be granted a special exemption into the main draw next week in Cincinnati and avoid the qualies this weekend.

  8. It was a good day to be watching Canadian Tennis today.

  9. Finally Milos playing aggressive Tennis pays off. Excatly what his Coach Ivan Ljubicic wants to see.
