Milos Raonic – Canada Fan Blog an (unofficial) blog about tennis and Canadian player Milos Raonic

2Aug/13Off

Montreal: Rogers Cup 1000

August 8th: Milos is up at 6pm, 1800hrs, Eastern (EDT). Pospisil should be up shortly, perhaps in 45 minutes (2:15pm, 1415hrs). He's on Banque Nationale court after the Paire/Matosevic, which is currently into the 2nd set.

August 7th - Raonic def Youzhny:

Anyone else think the old Milos is back? 6-4, 6-4; Milos Raonic (CAN) puts away Mikhail Youzhny with a style and confidence not unlike last year and the early parts of this year. Pospisil was also impressive today, putting in another great win. Eugenie Bouchard will follow the Williams/Schiavone match with is currently in the 2nd set. Fichman, Peliwo and Dancevic went down (barely) with valiant efforts, and Levine, a victim of the draw-gods, was only able to muster enough to take two games from Nadal, falling 6-2, 6-0 on the Centre Court (Court Central) in Montréal.

How awesome is it to have two Canadians in the third round here at Canada's Masters 1000 tourney??

That Raonic/Pospisil one-two punch will hopefully pay off in Serbia versus Tipsarevic and (maybe) Djokovic...

Aug 7th (morning): Milos Raonic (CAN) is up against Youzhny on Court Central not before 6pm, EDT. There's a good many Canadians to look out for though in Montréal today:

At 12:00 noon Vasek Pospisil (CAN) is up against Stepanek on the National Bank Court. Dolgopolov will take on Berdych following that match, then Frank Dancevic (CAN) will take on Janowicz as the 3rd match on court.

Not before 2pm EDT, Jesse Levine (CAN) takes on Rafa Nadal on Court Central. Levine (CAN) follows the Murray/Granollers match. After the Levine (CAN) match, Milos Raonic (CAN) will take on Youzhny on the main court, but not before 6pm EDT.

Following the Fognini/Gulbis match starting at 12:00 noon on court 9, Filip Peliwo (CAN) will take on Istomin.

Finally, as the final match on Court 5 (maybe 6pm EDT??), Frank Dancevic (CAN) and Adil Shamasdin (CAN) will take on Dimitrov and Kohlschreiber.

Then in Toronto, we have Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) against Kvitova (defending champ) as the last match on Centre Court (following S. William vs, Schiavone, which starts at 7pm EDT). We don't want to miss that.

The 2nd match on Grandstand will be Sharon Fichman (CAN) vs. Jelena Jankovic; Fichman defeated Stephanie Dubois (CAN) yesterday.

As the final match on Court 1, sometime after suitable rest, Sharon Fichman (CAN) and Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN) take on Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova in doubles.

That rounds off the Canadian action today - quite a lot for a Masters 1000! Make us proud guys and gals!

Aug 6th (quick post-match comments): Wow, some tense moments between flashes of brilliance. Milos needs 3 sets to defeat Jeremy Chardy of France. Historic day for Canadian Tennis though, with 5 men making it to the 2nd rnd, and 2 women. Pospisil was great against Isner, that match was a joy to watch. Bouchard continues to impress - hope to see more of her as the tournament progresses (though her next opponent will be difficult).

Aug 6th: Milos off to a good start - opens with a break against Chardy.  On Sportsnet now!!!

Aug. 2:  Draw is out:

>>  http://www.rogerscup.com/men/pdf/draws/2013/MDS_aug3.pdf   << ...and it's a tough one for Milos:   1) Jeremy Chardy ATP#28 2) M. Youzhny #27 or J. Melzer #32 3) (likely) 6th-seed J. Del Potro. Hopefully Milos will rise to the occasion.

  1. Milos just lost his appeal to me when he did not call the touch of the net on himself. That is just Chicken—–.

    • I have to stick up for him a little. He didn’t lie, or say he didn’t know. When a call goes in your favour, that’s it. At the moment the intensity probably meant he didn’t have much of a chance to consider the ethics of it to any great extent, easy for us to say sitting on the couch… I’m sure he doesn’t feel great about the fact that it led to his winning the match.

In the end it was just a slip of his foot, delPo was 10 feet away from any position to hit the ball. It’s not as if he tried to do it in the first place to try and get away with it.

If it were a line call in his favour that he thought was flawed, should he tell the chair umpire? Challenge on the other player’s behalf?

Also, I don’t mind them showing that on TV, but in the stadium it’s not cool. Messes with the umpire’s and players’ heads.

    • I disagree. When it comes to highly competitive matches both players really want to win you have the umpire there to make those judgment calls. The umpire agreed at the time that Milos touched the net, but claimed the play was dead. Unfortunately for Del Potro he is human and made the wrong call. It is not up to Milos to make the call. If that were the case then the line judges and umpire would not need to be there in the first place. In the heat of the moment Milos is not thinking ethically just as wacb suggest (nor is any athlete). A baseball player tagged out at second base but called safe does not concede the out because the umpire was wrong. Sports do not work like that in general. Look back at Djokovic getting called with the net violation at Roland Garros. He clearly did not like the call even though it was the correct one. Had that umpire made the same mistake there do you think Djokovic would have called himself on the point? I don’t believe he would have.

As far as showing replays in stadium I don’t believe they should either. The umpire didn’t let the evidence of his bad call get to him at least as he went on to make a couple overrules (of course against Del Potro much to his dislike) that ended up being the correct calls.

  2. Milos just won the 1st Set 7-5 over Del Potro. Milos called for the Trainer & Doctor in the early going. He probably has a minor injury but that didn’t cause majpr problems.

  3. Outstanding match from Vasek! Great to see him beat a top 10 opponent! Now time for Milos to match that impressive tennis. Great crowd atmosphere too.

    • I’m kind of happy it wasn’t on Court Central – as Pospisil didn’t seem frazzled at all until the end. Another great showing from a Canadian. Will be happy to see him playing more tournaments with Raonic on tour due to the points he’ll pick up here!

I have a feeling they’ll try to fit his next match onto Court Central ; ).

  4. Outstanding result. Wasn’t able to catch any of Milos’ match but the match statistics look very nice. Vasek again looked impressive, maybe a little bit of nerves showing closing out the second set, but already had a large enough advantage for it not to affect him. Really looking forward to watching both Canadians in action tomorrow. Not to look too far forward, but should Vasek manage to get through Berdych that quarterfinal matchup should not be nearly as difficult with Ferrer losing today. Of course he still has a tall task in Berdych to come first. Dodig also looks to be knocking off Del Potro (Dodig up a couple breaks at 4-1 in the third set as I am writing this). Milos would get a rematch against the man that knocked him out of Eastbourne should Dodig hold on.

    • Whoops I guess I spoke too soon. Dodig completely collapsed at the end their so Milos will get a shot against Del Potro. Should be a good match.

  5. It just shows that Canadian Tennis is alive and well and getting stronger.
It’s all about believing in yourself and getting a chance to prove it.
    Look out world.

  6. Milos looked a lot better today than he did in his last match. Still looked a little tight in some crucial points and thought he may throw a service game away near the end with some of the double faults he was making, but he battled through those and came through in the end. His forehand was much better today and he did not seem to give away too many points. He played a more aggressive style and he was able to get a number of opportunities on Chardy’s serve which is a really good sign. Let’s hope for more of the same (if not better) tomorrow!

Also some impressive wins by other Canadians leading to 5 of them reaching the second round! Particularly impressed with Vasek’s recent play. He seems to really be figuring it out and playing some strong tennis. Very impressive to come back from a break down in the third set particularly against Isner and to win 2 tie-breaks in the same match against Isner is another impressive feat. He continues to climb the rankings and could give Canada a respectable 1-2 punch with Milos for the foreseeable future. I like his chances against Tipsarevic in September with Tipsarevic’s recent poor play. Hopefully he can finish the year strong with a possible showing in the Challenger Tour Finals at the end of the season and finish in the top 40-50.

    • Especially at the beginning, he looked like the old Milos. Then some of that uncertainty crept in it seemed. Looking forward to all the Canadian tennis today! I really think Pospisil has a chance against Stepanek if things line up and he plays like he did yesterday…

  7. Milos is in decline sadly. Hey Guys. What about Jerzy Janowicz? Plays a similar Game to Milos. I’m inclined to support him as well along with Milos.

    • Milos has been in a slump, and has changed coaches; he will get back on track, just a matter of when. I look forward to seeing a match with Janowicz, but will be rooting for Milos.

    • As Jack said, he can’t just lose the skill, and the performance for the past couple of years has not been luck, it’s been skill. What he has lost is his mental edge. When he regains it, the physical factor and skill will be there waiting for him : ). Definitely can be described as a slump, an indefinite decline, don’t think so, hope not anyways!

There are a number of other great young players I’m looking forward to seeing grow. From the Canadian side, for the women’s, I think Bouchard has a lot of potential if she focuses and puts in the work. She has the build for it, though a couple of more inches of height would be nice… Was hoping Dolgopolov would keep it together and perform at his potential, but he’s been up and down (more down) lately.

    • Speaking of Janowicz, yeah, great stuff. Just finished watching the first set against Nadal. He’s got great potential as well and a joy to watch. So much power!
