Davis Cup Semi-Final – Canada vs. Serbia, Belgrade

Sep 14th: This says it all:

Sep 13th: Milos Raonic let the match go to 5 sets, including giving Tipsarevic match points up 6-5 in the 5th, before taking that final set 10-8. Perhaps it was just to add to the excitement... Perhaps because it was Friday the 13th.

Here's a good pic of Milos' excitement after the match:

Update, Sept 12th:

Tweet from ArashMadani, looks like Djokovic is confirmed:

"BREAKING: Novak Djokovic just told me he has informed Serbia Tennis that he'll play Friday. Debate is over. "My country needs me," he said.

— Arash Madani (@ArashMadani) September 12, 2013"

The first day's action will be Djokovic versus Pospisil, then Tipsarevic vs. Raonic. Then, Saturday will have the Bozoljac/Zimonjic versus Nestor/Pospisil, followed by reverse singles on Sunday.

It's a tough ask for Pospisil, these 3 matches are big, emotionally intense 5-setters. From what we've seen though, I have a feeling his adrenaline can carry him through it.

Of course, Canada will be behind our team, though the distances involved make it unlikely that many Canadians will make the trip to see it. But, as Sportsnet reminds us, Nestor and Raonic were born in the former Yugoslavia (Nestor born right in Belgrade) and Pospisil and Dancevic have family connections as well (as their surnames suggest).

"And while it’s the Serbians with home-court advantage, the Canadians won’t exactly feel out of place, as each team member has a family connection to the region." --http://www.sportsnet.ca/tennis/cameron-canada-in-new-territory-at-davis-cup/

Update, Sept 11th:

Looks like Novak Djokovic will be avail for the Davis Cup tie's first day. Here's a report from Tom Tebbutt from Belgrade:

Tebbutt: Reassessing Novak's Part

Here's a neat article about Yvon Gilbert, the string-maestro for Canada's Davis Cup team and the Rogers Cup:

First off, here's a sneak peek from the twitter-verse of Milos practicing on the clay in Belgrade:

Looks like a new "uniform" for Davis Cup. Same large white maple leaf in upper left chest. Looks sharp. Sharp enough to win.

  1. Time for Milos to pull the biggest win of his career or Pospisil can’t wait.
I really hope Pospisil will play at 100% if required somthing tells me its up to him to send Canada in its first final ever! Good Luck Canada

    • Tomorrow’s going to be awesome. An underdog in each match, need to win one, awesome. It’s a long shot, but that’s why they play the matches.

  2. Real chance for Canada to make the final. Call me crazy but i have a feeling will pull of an upset on Djokovic. Milos and Pospisil should win against tipsarevic, and nestor with pospisil should do the job for the double.
All the best hope its 2-0 after the 1st day for Canada =)

    • Well, the hopes of being up 1-0 before the Raonic/Tipsy match have been dashed. Not to worry, I expect we’ll be all tied up heading into tomorrow’s doubles…

      • Thats if Milos can win the match. He just blew the first set up after playing balls for 5-2…

        • Pretty sure Milos just likes to make things suspenseful…

          • If Canada wins the doubles today i will start to believe Canada can qualify. Its all about doubles who ever wins it might get the edge for sunday as Milos has a slim chance to beat Djokovic on clay.
