Cincinnati, early rounds – Masters 1000 – Western and Southern Open

John Isner def Milos Raonic, 7-6(5), 6-4:

It was a fairly straight-forward match. Milos dropped his game during the 1st set tiebreak long enough to lose the 1st set, then played very well to go up a break in the second, before dropping his game long enough to lose that break and then to go down a break to Isner. Isner served out the match in his usual style and so ends Milos' Cincinnati run.

Next up is the US Open, where he'll probably be seeded 10th or 11th or so - we'll see how the rankings shake out. I don't think there's any way he could drop out of the top 12, which means he'll likely face someone seeded 5-8 in the round of 16, before meeting a 1-4 seed in the QFs. Long way to go before that though, we'll see how that road looks when the draw comes out.

Milos Raonic versus John Isner, now starting on Court 3 in Cincinnati (1:45pm EDT):

There's no hawkeye on that court. But check this out on the big screen. Kinda cheesy, show's that Milos has hit the big time:

Quick Update: Milos won in straights, fairly easy going, was in control the whole time. The Battle of the Serve starts tomorrow, rematch of Rogers Cup 2012 match that ousted Milos during his homecoming. Luckily, Pospisil took care of Isner to avoid the same fate. Let's see if Raonic can do a little better at Cincy 2013.

Quick Update:

Update, August 14th:

See the comments below (click here) for some post-match commentary.

Timings for Canadian players today (2nd round, in chronological order):

Vasek Pospisil is up first on Court 6 versus David Goffin (a qualifier).  The match starts at 11am Eastern (1100h EDT).  There's no video coverage.

Eugenie Bouchard has a date with Serena Williams as the second match on the Center Court.  It is listed as not before 1pm Eastern (1300h EDT) but it might be later if the Youzhny/Murray match runs long...

Milos Raonic is up third on the Grandstand court versus Janko Tipsarevic.  The preceding match starts at 1pm Eastern (1300h EDT) (Isner/Gasquet), so Milos' match will likely be 3pm Eastern (1500h EDT).  There is video coverage of this court, but the order of play notes that there is a "Possible Court Change", so if the two preceding matches run long it may be moved to a non-video court.  Not sure whether Sportsnet will show this coverage online or on SN1 or SN360, etc...

Daniel Nestor plays alongside Robert Lindstedt versus Lipsky/Gonzalez as the final match on the Grandstand court following a women's match.  The ladies start not before 7pm Eastern (1900h EDT) so Nestor will be on around 8:30pm Eastern (2030h EDT).

Galo Blanco News

I didn't know, but JaxonX tipped us off that Galo Blanco is now coaching Jurgen Melzer.  Here's a copy of the Sportsnet.ca article, which also talks about the emotional side of the break-up between Raonic and Blanco (article link).  The article mentioned that Raonic planned to play alongside Melzer in double in Cincinnati, but the Order of Play shows Mardy Fish, noted as "[PR]" before his name.  Does anyone know what "[PR]" means in front of a players name?

Melzer said he was "very happy" to have Blanco in his corner, calling it a "fresh start".  (adapted from an article from an article written in German at zeit.de)

One more thing...

Tomorrow (Tues, Aug 13th) Milos will play the evening session on the Grandstand Court in Cincinnati. Vasek Pospisil is 3rd up on Court 7. Eugenie Bouchard, the other Canadian we're keeping our eye on, played today and defeated Monica Puig 6-3, 6-4, making it to the 2nd round of two Masters 1000s in a row.

Milos Raonic will face Jack Sock at 7pm (1700) EDT, and it should be available to be televised, so hopefully Sportsnet chooses to show it. The Center Court will have the likes of Sharapova, followed by Roger Federer, starting at 7pm. Pospisil's match won't be televised, but he'll have a tough task against Gilles Simon. He has entered the tournament on a special exemption due to his recent success in Montréal.

Sock has already defeated Raonic once this year, knocking Milos out of Memphis in the round of 32. That's been the only meeting of the two on tour so far... Jack Sock, an American, is a couple of years younger than Raonic and the two young stars carry much of the hope for future tennis greatness in their countries. Jack Sock gained entry to the W&S Open via a Wild Card.

If Pospisil wins tomorrow, he'll face qualifier David Goffin, and further success will likely mean a Davis Cup semi-final preview versusu Djokovic. Raonic would move on to face Tipsarevic if he wins tomorrow (another upcoming Davis Cup tie preview), followed by a likely 3rd round match with Richard Gasquet.

Eugenie Bouchard will face Serena Williams in the 2nd round. Ouch. I expect we'll see another match similar to Nadal vs. Raonic- might be painful to watch.

Good comment from Sam I'd like to share: Nadal really is on a level of his own at this time with Djokovic slightly behind him I believe. Would have liked to see a bit of a closer match but hopefully Milos does take some positives of out this and learn from it in the future. In his post match interviews he seemed pretty happy despite the tough loss which is promising and it looks like he has gained some confidence that he can carry through the remainder of the season.

Vasek has an interesting first round matchup against Gilles Simon who hasn't been sharp of late. If Vasek can carry over his form from the last few weeks I think he can pull out a win.

Milos has a rematch with Jack Sock in round one who beat him in the first round back in Memphis. Should be better prepared this time around assuming there's no hangover from reaching his first ATP 1000 final.

Both matches I assume will be on Tuesday as they are not on the schedule for tomorrow.

Both Milos and Vasek are drawn into Djokovic's quarter so maybe if we are lucky we can have a preview of Davis Cup for both players and even if they do come out on the wrong side they can take some notes of how to better approach that matchup in the Davis Cup.

  1. Anyone know if Peliwo will be playing in the qualifying for the US Open this week? I haven’t seen him on any lists for qualifying participants. I thought he would have been given a wild card for the qualifying tournament considering he won the junior tournament last year, just as he had for wimbledon. A little disappointed not to see his name there.

  2. It looked like Milos’ shoulder was affecting his serve. Just 4 aces is not something you expect from Milos especially when it comes against Isner. He really labored trying to hold serve. Did not have too many easy service games like he’s used to. His ground strokes didn’t seem to be affected as much by the shoulder but to me it seemed pretty obvious in the serve that it wasn’t right. Hopefully this is not an issue that will continually bother him and hopefully it is gone by the US Open (He did receive a trainer’s attention for it in Montreal as well). Milos will drop out of the top 10 unfortunately with this loss. Big opportunity lost for the 8th seed but he will still be seeded in the top 12 for the US Open meaning none of the top 4 until the quarters. I’d like to see how he matches up with Federer in R16. I think that would be a good matchup.

    • Yes, the shoulder thing is concerning, especially since I gather from the conversations with the trainers between games in Montreal and Cincinnati that he doesn’t know why it feels “dead”. Very strange, but protecting the shoulder would explain the drop near the end of the match.

Speaking of Federer, intense match-up versus Haas right now…

    • Details on the shoulder (pinched nerve):
CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/m/rich/sports/story/2013/08/15/sp-atp-wta-western-southern-open.html << I am pretty impressed with how well Milos was able to play, given the shoulder issue. And it sounds like Milos is expecting to be 100% in time for the US Open. Looking forward to seeing his complete game there!

  3. Tomorrows Match vs Isner could have some Major Seeding Implications for Milos as Robredo has just beaten Wawrinka.

With a win tomorrow Milos would be No 9 AND with Tsonga more likely than not withdrawing from USO Milos could get a Top 8 Seeding for New York which could allow him not to face Rafa, Novak, Andy or Ferrer until the Quarterfinals.

    • Tsonga officially withdrew from the US Open so a win tomorrow will likely give Raonic the 8th seed for the final grand slam of the year. Big opportunity for him.

      • Definitly a Big Opportunity for Milos now. Imagine with a win over Isner he would be the # 8 Seed for the USO. With a favorable Draw (Higher Seeding) he could make inroads to possibly reach his 1st GS QF.

  4. Pretty straight forward match for Milos. Served very well today. Had a 7 break points, but could only break once. The match was never really in doubt he seemed to have control the whole way through. Big servers will meet tomorrow. Don’t expect too many returns of serve.

    • Barring a deep run from Haas, a win tomorrow against Isner will keep Milos in the top 10, 9th if Wawrinka loses to Robredo today.

    • Agree, he’s getting back to being in form now. Looking fwd to the clash of the serve!

  5. Ouch! Just not meant to be for Vasek today. Had trouble closing it out in the only closely contested set of the match. He looked to have dominated the first set but could not convert on any of 9 break opportunities he earned and even just one converted would have meant no third set. Instead a late break gave Godffin the set 7-5. He rolled over Goffin 6-1 in the second set. In the third he broke Goffin in the first game but could not consolidate then broke him again to go up 6-5 but could not serve out the match. In the tiebreak Vasek had a 6-3 lead but could not convert 3 match points and wound up losing the tiebreak 8-6. All in all a pretty good run the last few weeks for Vasek coming out of nowhere. Hopefully he can recharge his battery and make another good run in a couple of weeks in the US Open with Davis Cup right after that.

    • VERY painful to watch that score ticker… hoping Raonic makes up for it. Looks good starting out so far, on serve but up a break point on Tipsarevic at 1-1 in 1st set…

  6. Both Canadians through!

Vasek seemed to have played well and then had a bit of luck with his opponent retiring early in the second set. Good quick for a player that said his tank was running a little low last week. He faces Goffin tomorrow at 11:00am on another court not televised. Should be another winnable match for him and a potential date with Djokovic looming on Thursday.

Milos started out a little sluggish falling behind a set. I wasn’t able to watch much of the first set, but he seemed to play pretty aggressive in the second and the third and kind of let Sock implode a little bit on his own. He did let a couple of 40-0 games get to deuce which you don’t really want to see, but he was still able to hold both of those games regardless. The game he broke Sock in final set he was trailing 0-40 so that was a pretty good effort to stay in there and break him there. He came to the net about 27 times. I really like watching him come in with the serve and volley and staying aggressive like that. It’s something that really puts pressure on his opponents to make a good passing shot on a big figure with pretty good hands at the net and particularly against lower ranked opponents it will be very effective. Tomorrow he will give us a Davis Cup preview against Janko Tipsarevic on Grandstand right after Isner and Gasquet face-off (one of whom he would play on Thursday). The match will probably begin around 3:00pm.

Of course we can’t forget about Eugenie. She will play at 1:00pm on Centre Court against Serena Williams. Very tough task ahead there.

    • Appreciate your detailed comment, Sam. I think you made a wise choice missing most of the first set, as it was not a particularly pretty picture. Second and third sets much more what we would expect/hope to see from Milos. Yes: nice to see a) Milos coming in on the serve-n-volley and b) winning those net points 2/3 of the time!

Milos will play Janko Tipsarevic on Grandstand approx. 2pm ET (after Isner vs Gasquet). [Bettors have Isner at even-odds vs Gasquet; do you agree??]

How nice to have a second HORSE (!!) in the race: Vasek vs Goffin at 11am ET.

And of course Genie Bouchard vs Serena at 1pm ET.

What a time to be a Canadian tennis fan!!

      • I really hope they both get in the 3rd round. But for Milos to get in the QF he really needs to face Gasquest rather then Isner i dont fancy his chances vs him and lets not forget he is playing at home…

        • I agree Gasquet may be an easier task, but I would like to see Milos play Isner again. The only time they did face off on tour was in Toronto last year. I remember watching the match (I was in the 6th row, courtside) and thinking that Milos was out-played at his “own game”. Now that Milos has added some more dimensions to his game and trying some new things, it would be nice to compare! Stage fright is no longer an issue either I don’t think.

      • I do think the Isner/Gasquet match is a toss-up, due to the styles of game between the two players…. and I still think Isner is better than his current ranking suggests…

      • I think Isner has a very good chance of beating Gasquet. Isner has been playing very well until his first round encounter with the red hot Vasek Pospisil last week. Should be interesting to see how Milos would match up against him.

  7. Vasek won his Match against Simon 6-3, 1-1 when Simon retired.
