Memphis 500 – US National Indoor Tennis Championships

Milos has left the building...

Losing to 20 year old Jack Sock, ranked outside the top 150 and a huge underdog, Raonic has made a 1st rnd exit from the Memphis ATP 500 Indoor Hard-Court tourney. The score was 3-6, 7-5, 5-7. The other important stat was this:

Break Points Converted:
Jack Sock : 2/3
Milos Raonic : 1/9

Not a good day for #TeamMilos. Unfortunately, other than the numbers, we can't say much since the 1st rnd wasn't covered anywhere: audio, video, TV, internet, nothing.

Memphis this week...

Milos is into Memphis this week, directly following his 3-years-in-a-row title win at San Jose. Raonic is 2nd seed in Memphis, edged out by Marin Cilic for that top starting spot. Even though he's 2nd seed, the conditions (indoor hard court) probably make him the favourite to win this thing. Raonic lost to Andy Roddick and JoJo Melzer in the finals of Memphis 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Milos will play his first match, versus 20-year-old Jack Sock, late on Wednesday, Feb 20th. He is up following the Bryan Bros in the 7pm session. (This session starts at 8pm Eastern Time, so Milos will probably start around 9:30pm ET)

Likely Quarterfinal opponent for Milos is his finals opponent last week in San Jose, Tommy Haas. His Semi-final opponent would likely be John Isner (can't wait for that, rematch of that Toronto match last year), and in the finals he would likely face Cilic, Nishikori, Querrey, or maybe Dolgopolov.

I'm hoping we get to see Dolgo and Isner matches, also, I can imagine Tommy Haas would like another crack at him, so all 3 of these would surely be great matches to watch!

  1. Things looking a lot better as the week progressed. Milos is 17th in the Live Rankings. Wawrinka is OUT of Acapulco. Nadals Appearance in Indian Wells in still uncertain.

Bottom Line is this: If Nadal plays IW Milos will be seeded 17th, if he doesn’t Milos will be seeded 16th.

    • Well then, this looks good after all… Nadal is apparently skipping the hard courts in Miami and Indian Wells. Not sure how that works since they’re required for him as with the other players, but I guess he’ll just take more “injury” time. I don’t know how that will affect his ranking…

      • As of today it appears that Rafa will play IW after all — and after a convincing victory over David Ferrer at the finals in Acapulco. Milos’ ATP ranking will be 17 tomorrow, so that will be his seeding in the IW draw Tuesday, unless another player withdraws. Not the end of the world: in the third round (R32) he’ll play someone seeded 9-16, instead of 17-24. If Milos’ rises to the occasion he’ll move to fourth round (R16). (And yes that assumes he wins his first and second round matches.)

  2. I hope Milos has learned a valuable lesson.Never take an opponent lightly regardless of ranking as there is such a fine line in tennis and work harder than you think you can to achieve your intended goal.Hoping to see a more focused Milos from here on in.

  3. This loss is a good wake up call for Milos.
    Never take any opponent lightly.

  4. Just got home from my tennis match.
    Saw the score.
    There must be a mistake.
    Say it isn’t so.It’s a bad dream
168th ranked Jack Sock beats # 14 Milos.
    What Happened?
    Need input here.

    • Hard to say, couldn’t watch it on TV or internet anywhere. Most telling statistic is 2/3 break points converted for J. Sock. 1/9 for Milos. Just a bad day I suppose. I will have to look for some post-match press/commentary…

    • You took the words right out of my mouth, Tom. As we “watched” the match (live scores) we kept thinking, “This can’t be happening; he’s got to turn it around.” Even on bad day, a top-16 player should beat a 100+ player. If Milos wants to stay top-16 he’s going to need to add “consistency” to his list of things to work on. Silver lining: Gallo Blanco now has an extra week to take him to the woodshed before Indian Wells, which, as a mandatory event (unlike Memphis) will count against him if he does not at least perform at par.

Such a shame! He should have at least made it the Final, and had a good shot at another title.

  5. Milos potential Semifinal Opponent John Isner has been beaten by Denis Istomin.

Milos will play James Blake in the 2nd Round if he gets past Jack Sock tonight.

    • Haha, John Isner’s potential semi-final opponent was also beaten. Imagine that. Tommy Haas (who did win in the 1st rnd) will have a pretty good go to the final now as that half of the draw has disintegrated!

    • What a weird tournament this has been. Last year’s finalists, Melzer and Raonic, ousted in the first round. Istomin takes Isner out in the first round, then makes very short work of Hewitt.

Cilic (top seed) was taken to 3rd set tie-breaker, which he barely won, 9-7, again, against a relative no-name (71st-ranked Sijsling). Matosevic took out 4th-seeded Querrey today too. I must say I’d be happy if Dolgo or Nishikori picked up this title, but they’re in the top seed’s half of the draw, and he (Cilic) is, apparently barely, still in it…

      • Milos Top 16 Seeding for Indian Wells becomes a little bit safer with Querrey now out.

        a) Stan Wawrinka would have to win the ATP-250 Event in Buenos Aires but would have to beat Albert Ramos, Nico Almagro and David Ferrer on Clay. He has also 180 Points to defend in Acapulco this week.
        b) Kei Nishikori & Alexandr Dolgopolov would have to win the ATP-500 Memphis Tourney to get past Milos BUT they’re in the same half.

        • Yes, top 16 will avoid a clash with the likes of Federer in the round of 32! He would need to make it at least that far (3rd rnd, R32) to defend last year’s points. Let’s hope he makes it further.

Judging by what you said above, I’d say he’s safe in top-16 seed territory.

          • The only Player who a realistic shot passing Milos for a Top 16 Seeding in Indian Wells is Japanese Kei Nishikori whom Milos lost in Tokyo last year.

Nishikori beat Cilic today. He’ll play the Winner of Dolgopolov/Matosevic. As I speak the Aussie will serve for the Match at 5-4 3rd Set.

          • If he does drop out of the top 16 I believe he would play a 9-16 seed in the third round. Might actually give him a better draw should he drop another spot in the rankings since it could help him avoid a top 4 seed until the quarters. If he stays where he is now he will be guaranteed to play a top 4 seed in the round of 16.

          • He’s guaranteed to play a top 4 in the rnd of 16 alright, but he’d face a top 4 (or someone who beat a top 4) before that if he was seeded outside the top 16 if I’m not mistaken… Either way, here’s hopin’ for another shot at the Feds!

          • Based on draws [last 3 yrs, Indian Wells: links below] it looks like players seeded 17-24 also do not play top-8 players till R16; and then it could be any one of top-8, i.e. 50-50 chance of it being a top-4 player. [Players seeded 25-32 are the ones who must meet a top-8 player in R32 = 3rd round.] So yes, let’s hope for another Fed-Milos match-up, but let it be QF or SF or F!

        • As of Saturday, Feb.23: well, Wawrinka is now tied with Milos in LiveRanking (live-tennis.eu) with 2050 points, but listed ahead of Milos; not sure why. Nishikori will play either Istomin or F.Lopez a the Memphis Final, and is likely to win (unless he succumbs to the same weird disease that seems to have affected all the other seeds.) So Milos is paying the price of sub-par results at Brisbane and Memphis: will no longer be ranked top-16 for the Indian Wells draw. If all other top players show up he’ll be seeded “third echelon” (17-24). The main consequence of that is in the third round (R32), where he will play someone seeded 9-16, instead of 17-24; no difference for fourth round, if he wins his third round match. Is this our “new normal”? I guess we’ll see.

Milos is, I’m sure, training hard this week and next: motivated! But next week Wawrinka is seeded approx 4th in Acapulco, so will distance himself from Milos by probably 90 points. And Delray Beach will have points for Isner, Haas, Nishikori, Dolgopolov and Querrey.

For now Milos’ goal of making top-8 by the end of 2013 will have to take a back seat, while he works to re-establish himself in top-16.

          • Milos is 18th in the new Official Rankings TODAY. He’ll gain one Spot next week unless Wawrinka makes the Semifinals in Acapulco. Querrey, Haas and Dolgopolov can’t catch Milos even if they win the Tournament in Delray Beach. Seppi would need to make the Final in Dubai to overtake Milos I think.

We shouldn’t be all that worried as Isner has IW Final to defend and Monaco has Miami Semifinal to defend so Milos likely will have a Top 16 Seeding for Miami.

          • I hope you’re right, Daniel!
