Raonic def. Gasquet at Cincinnati, 1st round

Gasquet and Raonic put in a good match.  Milos played solidly, except for the final game of the first set before the tie-break, and the final game of the second set, as he was serving it out.  He did come out of those games on top, but he did make us worry during the first few points of each!

As with the Toronto final, Gasquet seemed to shrink away a little after he went down a break in the second set.  He visibly stopped going for Raonic's first serves and almost admitted defest right there, it seemed.

Here are my reactions throughout the match.  Not much to remark about, it could have been any opponent when Milos is playing well - just too hard to break on serve.

Raonic will face Marcos Baghdatis tomorrow on Court 3, not before 2:30 EDT.  We'll wait and see if SportsNet ONE will be airing it...

  1. Great win for Milos.Baghdatis can be tough.Next up Berdych to go down.
    Keep it going Milos.

    • Yes, tougher than expected: another character-builder for Milos, as well as a nail-biter for fans! Baghdatis came out full-bore, and Milos seemed shaky to begin with. But he maintained composure (as usual!) and got himself back on form for the come-from-behind victory. Still on track for 16-seed at US Open, fingers crossed.

  2. I agree Robert regarding Milos’s performance at home.He will perform better next time.
I did predict Milos would make his move at Cincy and US OPEN so again hope I’m right.

    • Also agree, and now Cincy draw has improved for Milos, with Baghdatis next, instead of Gilles Simon, who would have been tough. Good chance Milos can stay one step ahead of Nishikori in rankings, and get 16-seed at US Open, since at least one player above him will not be coming. (Sorry, Rafa.) That avoids a top-8 clash till fourth round. Go Milos!

  3. Magnificent ! That’s a good victory by Milos ! His defeat in Canada was due to the pressure playing home. He shows there he is better than Isner who was beaten by Gasquet. Congrats Milos !
