Milos in Monte Carlo

The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters event is about to get underway and we will finally see Milos Roanic back in action. The draw is out and Raonic will face Albert Montanes (ESP) in the first round.

The two have yet to meet on the tour, and Montanes hasn't played much since the South American clay court swing where he failed to advance past the first round in his last three tournaments. His best result so far this year was when he reached the quarters in Chile and lost to Juan Monaca in three sets.

Should Milos get through the first round, he will have Janko Tipsarevic waiting for him. Tipsarevic is seeded No.7 and has a first round bye. As you recall, Raonic won his first title of the the year by defeating the Serbian in the finals of Chennai in three tight sets. The clay courts in Monte Carlo are a far cry from the big-serve-friendly hard courts. We'll have to wait and see if Raonic can get through Montanes first.

It looks like Sportsnet ONE will have coverage of the tournament beginning on Monday, April 16, at 4 PM EST. Not sure if they will be able to show Milos' first round match live.

UPDATE: Milos Raonic vs Albert Montanes will be the last match on Court Central after Benneteau vs Granollers today (Monday). They are currently on court and it looks like they're going to a third set. No word if the Raonic match will be live on TV, so check your favourite online streaming service!

  1. To say Milos lives in Monte Carlo is simply untrue, considering if only his numerous tweets. He goes as much as possible back to Thornhill, Ontario, where his parents live, as you see, for instance, from what he did after his injury in Miami. He obviously loves Canada and is devoted to his country. He will go in South Africa for Davis Cup. He does his best to promote tennis at home.
He trains in Barcelona with his coach, Galo Blanco, and loves the place, as shows his support for Barca.
He takes holidays in Montenegro where his brother and sister live. It seems almost a hidden garden to him and much needed one. It must be great for him to forget tennis in his birth place country.
He travels all the time throughout the world as other tennis champions which must be very tiresome sometimes.
Monte Carlo is a beautiful setting, with many facilities for tennis, a sunny climate, not far from most Europeans tournaments. He may have some settlement there, but the best is to ask him. Only ATP says he is a Monte Carlo resident. I don’t see much harm in it and you need proves just to say he doesn’t pay his taxes in his country. Besides, I understand you pay taxes in the country where you play. That is one reason why Nadal preferred Halle to Queens this year as he said.
Why some Canadians like to criticise their only great tennis player is to me a great mystery, especially with no proves …

  2. Since Milos is now living in Monte Carlo, not paying back taxes he used to become a good player et make millions of dollars, I boycott him. Bouhou Raonic!

    • As far as I know, Milos has not “moved” to Monte Carlo. He’s been there getting ready for the tournament and has posted a few pictures on his twitter account but that’s it… He had been training in Spain for a few years as well but I’m pretty certain he’s still a Canadian resident.

    • You’re thinking of Djokovic.

      • No, I’m talking about Milos. Go on the ATP site and check “Residence” field, it’s stated “Monte-Carlo, Monaco”. Maybe ATP is wrong. I would like if it’s the case.

        • Interesting. His Wikipedia page lists his residences as Thornhill, ONT and Barcelona, Spain. I can’t find any other mention of Milos making Monte Carlo his residence.
