Milos Seeded No.4 in Memphis

It's a quick turnaround for Milos Raonic after winning the SAP Open for the second year in a row on Sunday. He's in Memphis this week at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships where he was a finalist a year ago.

The draw has been released and Raonic has been seeded No.4 in the tournament. Big serving Americans John Isner and Andy Roddick are the top two seeds respectively and Radek Stepanek is in the No.3 spot. Raonic is in Andy Roddick's half of the draw which is who Milos lost to in the finals last year in a stunning three set match.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, Milos has a first round match to take care of. Raonic has drawn up against Ernests Gulbis (LAT). The two have met just once previously with the Canadian winning in straight sets on the clay in Monte Carlo. The hard court conditions clearly favour Milos this week and he is carrying a lot of momentum in to this tournament after winning his third ATP Tour title in San Jose.

Raonic's first round match is scheduled for Wednesday evening, after the Roddick vs Malisse match. There is no word yet if this match will be shown on Sportsnet, but their TV Schedule indicates their coverage begins on Sportsnet ONE at 7PM EST on Thursday, February 23rd.

  1. Milos has recently said that he’s aiming for top-10 this year.

I think top-10 is possible for Milos this year, though perhaps not likely. He would have to make it (on average) to: [math not exact, here]
the finals of every 250 he enters, [exceeded that goal, so far in 2012!]
    SF of every 500,
QF of most 1000’s — (more than half, at least)
R16 (fourth round) of most Slams. — (3 out of 4)

[Of course if he plays more than 18 tournaments, he’ll be able to drop a few under-performances off the bottom.]

    B) Those are great goals for him; but more realistic goals would be: (average 90 pts/tourney instead of 150)
SF of every 250 he enters,
    QF of every 500,
    R16 of every 1000,
R32 of every Slam. [e.g. 2012 Australian Open]

I would suggest “A” as reasonable goals, and “B” as minimum expectations.

To make top-10 Raonic will have to win more than 50% of the time against players ranked 5 to 15; and win most of the time against 15+ players. Possible: hopefully we’ll see him do it!

    • Note “Plan B” gets Milos to top-20 by end of 2012, which I think is entirely realistic.

      • I agree that ending the year inside the Top 20 is a real possibility for Milos. But as you say, he’s going to need a winning record over the other top players. He didn’t have to face anyone inside the Top 30 at the SAP Open with Monfils and Roddick going out.

In Memphis, the top players he would have to beat are Andy Roddick (possible semi-final) and/or John Isner (possible final). But we’re a long way from those potential matchups right now.
