Raonic v. Benneteau about to start…

Verdasco just defeated Cilic on "Central Court" and

Up next today, 7 Nov, at about 9 am Eastern, is Milos Raonic (CAN) versus Julien Benneteau (FRA).

The two have never met before on the tour, but Milos outranks Julien by 25 positions (29 and 54 respectively).  While Benneteau might have the "home-team" advantage, I have it from a good source that Milos Raonic has won over some of the French fans.

Même si M. Benneteau viens de l'equippe Francais, j'ai entendu que Milos a gagner des fans Français aussi!

Vas-y Milos!

  1. So sorry for Milos ! There was but one break and on the wrong side ! But he looses with honor, if only by the number of aces ! His recovery from hip injury is on the good track and he will be happy to get back to his home country. Certainly, the exhibition match with so much admired Pete Sampras, with a Canadian audience, is going to be something for him ! Take care of Milos, Canadian fans, we want him back next year in perfect shape and ready to get in the front run !

  2. I’m not very knowledgeable about tennis but I’m learning. I’m sorry for Raonic today as I see he has lost his match in the first round again. I think Milos relies to much on his serve and it appears to me that his return of serve is not very strong. Roddick came on the scene with a big serve and not much of anything else. Later in his career he had to work on building a more complete game. But had he done that before he might have had a more stellar tennis career. I hope Milos is not another Roddick. Besides his serve what other strengths does Roanic possess as a tennis player?

    • It will come, Carrie, and he is working on it. Give him time. Look where Tomic and Dimitrov (whom he has beaten in Stockholm) are. His model is Pete Sampras and not Roddick, both in tennis style and behavior, which is good. It is really a shame he had to have that hip injury, but he seems to be recovering rather fast. As you, I hope he gets in the future beyond the first round, because it is always disappointing to see a player you love quit a tournament so quickly. However it so happens for half the draw …

    • Raonic knows as well as anyone that without a more complete game he can’t expect to beat the best and win the biggest tournaments. Yes, the serve is heavily relied upon for most matches. But all players need a solid strength they can turn to when in trouble.

Sure, Roddick has won ‘only’ one Major, but he’s also won several 1000 level events and made a few Major final appearances. No doubt he’d have more wins if he weren’t so unlucky as to be playing in the era of Federer and Nadal.

The point is, there’s a lot of potential for Milos even though right now the serve is the biggest point of his game. But he recognizes he will have to put the work in for the other aspects of his game if he wants to go deep in the 1000s and the Majors. That’s partly why he went to work with a Spanish coach in order to broaden his tennis education and learn the work ethic of some of the most consistent and tenacious players on the planet.
