Monfils withdraws, Raonic advances

Raonic is currently playing an exhibition match against "Dr." Ivo Karlovic. Gael Monfils withdrew from today's match citing a wrist injury and as a result, Milos advances to his first ATP Final without having a play a semi-final. Neat. Although advancing to the finals in a walkover, beating veterans like Malisse and Blake is no small feat.

It's no surprise that the first set of this exhibition match went to a tiebreak, since both players tend to protect their serve well. It looks like the second set is heading towards a similar result.

It'll be interesting to see who Raonic will play in the finals, though I'm sure it'll be a good match regardless of who advances from the Verdasco vs Del Potro semi.

Good luck in the finals, Milos.

  1. I like the “Canadian Missile” better. also, did he say “spinach” at some point?

    • Spinich? I don’t get it.

      • well, Raonic was serving in the Ad court when the guy said it. so maybe it has to do with Raon-ICH having to SPIN the serve in. who knows. could it be a nickname? or just an insignificant off-the-cuff remark about serving in the ad court? time will tell. maybe. perhaps.

        • That is a stretch. Most of the time I wish you could turn off the “commentary” track. Nobody listens to it on DVDs and I often wish it were an option for sporting events.

  2. You can watch the SAP Open that is going on now in San José here:

It has the exhibition match that’s going on now and will have the semi tonight (Verdasco / del Potro) and the final tomorrow… 3pm Pacific Time i think…

Also, the announcer just called Raonic “The Maple Leaf Missile” – cheesy but it may catch on.
